Neck pain;

Neck pain affects a significant number of individuals. Recent studies have found more than 10% of the population suffer from neck pain at any given time. The neck region contains many delicate, pain sensitive structures commonly exposed to abuse and abnormal stresses. Incomplete rehabilitation of past injuries, poor posture, prolonged sitting, muscle imbalances, poor spinal alignments are some of the more common factors in the development of neck problems.

What is neck pain?

The neck is located between the head and the shoulders. Because of its location and range-of-motion, it is often left unprotected and subject to injury and pain.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can result from many different causes - from injury to inflammatory disease. Causes of neck pain and problems may include the following:

  • injury (damage to the muscles, tendons, and/or ligaments)
  • herniated cervical disk
  • arthritis (i.e., osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • congenital (present at birth) abnormalities of the vertebrae and bones
  • Anterior head carriage-where your head protrudes further forward over your chest. An ideal head carriage position for a man is a position where if a plumb line were dropped from his chin it would hit his chest bone. If a plumb line were attached to the under side of his chin and the line missed his breast bone and hit the floor it is likely he carries his head too far forward. Often tall people tend to incline and lean their head in when in conversation. This over time causes increased stress on the neck muscles that support the head and increases the stress on the joints within the neck.
  • Very rarely tumours of the spine or soft tissues within the neck cavity can be responsible for neck pain
