The following information should be used as a rough guide only, always consult your Chiropractor or GP for a thorough examination. If your pain goes down the back of your thigh but stops at the knee, you also have low back and or buttock pain, the problem is often with your sacroiliac joint being inflamed. These are the joints where your spine and pelvis meet. It is also where the two dimples over your low back are. It usually begins as an acute pain in the lower back and then extends down the back of either leg. The pain usually worsens with long periods of sitting or standing. If your pain is shooting down your leg, worse on coughing and sneezing and feels like a sharp shooting pain, or you are feeling pins and needles down your leg you may have a problem with one of your discs. Discs are the shock absorbers of the spine, and when they or their internal material is not in place, can irritate or press on nerves that supply the muscles and skin in our legs. Pain killers or muscle relaxants are unable to correct the nerve compression caused by a bulging disc. Surgery is effective, but is considered a last resort and often involves cutting away disc tissue or removing bone to make room for the nerve.
Fortunately, most people with lower back pain respond well to Chiropractic manipulation. Chiropractic manipulation generally results in an improved joint range of motion which reduces impingement of the nerve(s).
